10 Pearls of Wisdom to Better Your Marriage

Greg and I just celebrated 10 years of marriage last Friday.  We thank God for the GIFT of our marriage.

Admittedly, marriage is not easy. Yet, when two people truly value  their marriage as the gift it was created to be, it can be fulfilling and rewarding.

Today, in honor of our 10 years, I’d like to share 10 Pearls of Wisdom for you to apply to your relationship. These pearls could make a life-changing difference in your marriage!

Grabacki_48a

I list these in no particular order—they are ALL important.

  1. Make a commitment to pray together daily. When God is your foundation, you can get through anything together on your knees.
  2. Choose to love each other even in those moments when you struggle to like each other. Love is a commitment NOT a feeling.
  3. Give each other your best. Serving leftovers, after you’ve given your best to everyone else, will always leave your partner feeling hungry.
  4. Be quick to admit when you are wrong. Say, “I’m sorry for____.” Name what you did or didn’t do specifically. “I was wrong. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
  5. Be your spouse’s biggest ENCOURAGER, not his/her biggest critic. Be the one who wipes away the tears, not the one who causes them.
  6. Stop giving your spouse the ‘finger’ (the index finger). Greet your spouse at the door with a hug NOT your index finger. Your index finger always says, “WAIT. Something or someone is more important than you.”
  7. Get the duct tape handy. When you have to choose between saying nothing or saying something mean or critical, put a piece of duct tape over your mouth and say NOTHING every time!
  8. Fire friends who speak poorly or criticize your spouse. Yes, that includes family members too.
  9. Support in public. Confront in private. Never talk badly about your spouse to other people or in front of others. It’s your job to protect your spouse.
  10. When your husband/wife breaks your trust or disappoints you, give them your forgiveness instantly. Forgiveness will promote healing and create the space for trust to be restored. Be quick to say, “I love you. I forgive you. Let’s move forward.”

I hope you’ll apply these simple truths to your relationship today. And, please share this post with your sphere of influence.

I’m STILL LAUGHING about being an ALIEN…of course, we BOTH KNOW that I AM! 🙂 Yes, so simple and yet so many do not make the time to implement these SIMPLE truths.

Susan Day is a dynamic, engaging, fun and compelling speaker. We were privileged to have her speak at our Women’s Retreat this spring. Susan has a way of helping people understand how to take positive steps to make the most of their life. She did this by challenging us, giving great information, making us laugh, and inspiring us to want to make a difference in our lives as we return home. Susan presents her ideas in such a fun and engaging way. Your group will NEVER be bored. What shines through in all of her presentation is her deep, honest and contagious love for the Lord. She does not hesitate to give God the glory for her life and the way she lives it. Finally, it is important to note Susan embraced the entire retreat. She spent time with the women all weekend. She connected one-on-one with the women, ate with them, got involved in the other activities of the weekend. She was fully invested and made it a priority to really get to know the participants. This made an impactful difference for the women attending the retreat. I will look for other venues where Susan is speaking as she is one of the best speakers I have heard.  Here are a few comments from some of the Retreat participants: She was very dynamic and energizing and gave a great message. What can I say she uplifted me when I really was in a bad way? Susan did a great job of connecting with us and she spent time getting to know us individually.  One word of recommendation…BUY SUSAN’S BOOK! Susan’s book, “Divine And Perfect Order (DAPO)—52 Simple Truths, Simple Tools and Simple Words of Wisdom for Your Life.” It’s worth your time and commitment. It brings truth to your...

When I drove home from my churches Women's Retreat in Lake Geneva after hearing Susan Day speak, it was one of those amazing days that everything seemed right in the world!  My sunroof was open, spring had finally opened it's eyes and the drive home was fabulous!  I have had beautiful days in the past, but that day was different.  God had touched my heart using Susan as His communicator.  Her zest for God, for her life and for sharing her knowledge with us was "refreshing"!  Being a visual person, she helped me with tools that I could use in my life in my relationships with others.  I am heading to Target purchase my small wastebasket and colored duct tape!  A little excitement bubbled up in my heart that day, and I thank Susan for telling me things I had already known... but in a new and refreshing way!  I am blessed. Our women’s retreat wasn’t run the same way this year as it has been for the past nine years.  Instead of a variety of speakers, there was to be just one.  Before the retreat began, I was sure one speaker couldn’t hold the attention of my oft-wandering mind.  Was I wrong! Is what I am about to say… -encouraging? -uplifting? -supportive? …is just one of the many things I took to heart the day Susan Day came to Epworth United Methodist Church for our annual women’s retreat. Try it!  It certainly has brought a positive change in my communication. If it doesn’t concern you, stay out of it. This was hard to digest, so we spoke briefly about it, and Susan helped me understand that point more clearly.  Removing myself from issues which don’t concern me has been freeing. You have to do something to change something. Ah, much easier said than done, but Susan helped get the point across.  I have taken action toward making some necessary changes.  The results have already helped me to enjoy life more. Since the day of the retreat, many changes have taken place in my life, each one as positive as the last. DAPO has become part of my daily devotions.  I find each one of Susan’s daily posts and comments from others uplifting and helpful.  Little did I know that on March 14, 2015, a new life journey would begin!  I have Susan to thank for getting me on the right path and can’t wait to see where this path takes me! Divine and Perfect Order, A Companion Journal, is an essential tool for anyone trying to cope with the challenges of life. I believe that is most of us. In her book, Susan Day provides 52 truths, tools and words of wisdom to assist the reader with that journey. I find them all to be valuable and worth thinking about as I deal with my own personal struggles. However, the "simple tool" that resonated with me the most was number 14: Let go and trust God.  It proceeds to ask the reader to question what you fear losing control of in your life, and how do you deal with it when this fear grips you.  I try to let go and let God, but my fears are so many, sometimes, I don't know where to start. This tool helps me remember, God Himself, is that start, the end, the Alpha, and the Omega.  Suddenly it all makes sense again. This is just my personal favorite, but Ms. Day's book undoubtedly has something for everyone! Lisa Spatafora
